Career Information Resources

The California Department of Education is now providing career information through the California Career Zone website.

The California CareerZone website features include:

  • Make Money Choices: This feature asks users what kind of lifestyle they want to live, tells them how much it will cost, and links directly to information about jobs that could realistically support that lifestyle and salary.

  • Cost of College: This feature helps students find colleges that are good matches for their career choice and provides cost information.

  • Parent Guide: This feature offers parents advice on how to help their children explore careers.

New enhancements to the California Career Center Web site include:

  • Classroom-Ready Curriculum: This feature has 17 new ready-made lesson plans for teachers to help their students set goals, develop an action plan for college and career, research jobs, assess their skills, and more.

  • Career Surfer: This is a new application that students can download from iTunes and Google Play to begin exploring careers on their mobile devices.

Both the California CareerZone and the California Career Center Web sites operate under the umbrella of the California Career Resource Network (CalCRN) program, a program designed to help anyone develop their careers.

WorkKeys Student Information

What is WorkKeys?

  • WorkKeys is a job skills assessment system measuring “real world” skills that employers believe are critical to job success.

  • WorkKeys measures workplace skills in math, reading for information, and locating information.

  • These skills are valuable for any occupation you are considering and at any level of education.

  • The results can be used for career exploration, to qualify for jobs and to promote within jobs.

What you need to know as a student.

  • WorkKeys gives you an idea about your readiness for the workforce and for specific jobs and careers.

  • Questions are based on situations in the everyday work world.

  • You should try your best on the assessments to get the most accurate picture of your workforce skills.

  • These scores help employers choose the most qualified candidates for their jobs.

  • WorkKeys helps you determine the skill levels and education required for various jobs.

Benefits of WorkKeys for students.

  • Enables you to rank above other job applicants who do not have the needed skills.

  • Shows prospective employers concrete proof of your skills.

  • Increases the chances you will be hired after graduation.

  • Enables you to see the importance of your classes.

  • Improves your success in entry-level and subsequent jobs.

Do you have the skills to be successful for your future career?  WorkKeys will help inform you if you do or not.  WorkKeys measures workplace skills in applied math (AM), reading for information (RI) and locating information (LI).  WorkKeys measures your “real world” skills that employers believe that are critical for job success.   WorkKeys is not like other tests, many of which measure how well prepared you are for college.  Instead, WorkKeys gives you an idea about how ready you are for the workforce in general and for specific jobs and careers.

Your WorkKeys scores are not grade levels or percentage scores.  They are skill level scores that range from 3 to 6 or 3 to 7 depending on the assessment.  The scores are good anywhere in the U.S. where employers are requiring WorkKeys scores to verify skill levels for occupations.
